The Town of Aberdeen, a growing community located adjacent to Pinehurst and Southern Pines is seeking dedicated candidates to fill a Downtown/Economic Development Planner position. Aberdeen and the surrounding Sandhills region of North Carolina offer an appealing quality of life that provides something for everyone. The successful candidate for this full-time position will be the leader in taking the town’s downtown revitalization efforts to the next level as we transition from a Main Street Downtown Associate Community to a fully recognized Main Street Community within the next 4-16 months. In response to the quality work environment offered by the town and the exciting opportunity to develop and build a dynamic economic development program, this position will require above average abilities to build interpersonal relationships, manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, exhibit excellent oral and written communications, demonstrate grant management capabilities and a good working knowledge of economic development opportunities both within and outside of our downtown area. This planner is responsible for managing complex projects including short and long range planning activities, grant administration, redevelopment and economic development opportunities, and downtown revitalization.  This position requires flexibility and a willingness to assist the day-to-day operations of the Planning Department and will have primary responsibility for the accurate and timely submission of required documents and reports to grantor and governmental agencies.  The position will also assess community and downtown development needs, develop plans and programs to address those needs, manage a current Downtown Master Plan effort, coordinate downtown events and festivals, encourage and oversee infrastructure improvements, and maintain an inventory of available commercial properties throughout the town’s jurisdiction.  Report submittals and meeting presentations to the town’s elected body and other agencies can also be expected, as determined by the Planning Director.

Requirements:  Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university, with a preference of major course work in urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, political science, public administration, business administration, geography or related field is a minimum requirement. Additional experience in project management, grant administration, and economic or downtown development is highly desirable. 

Must possess a valid NC driver’s license and ability to work flexible hours, including substantial evening and weekend meetings as needed.  The successful applicant must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background investigation, and credit check.  Hiring range: $37,793 – $45,000 with opportunity for career advancement.
