The Town of Aberdeen, a growing community located adjacent to Pinehurst and Southern Pines is seeking an experienced individual to join our team as the Town’s next Planning Director. Aberdeen and the surrounding Sandhills region of North Carolina offer an appealing quality of life that provides something for everyone. Aberdeen is a commercial, industrial, and railroad hub located in Southern Moore County, and a thriving town full of historical charm. Aberdeen is a recently designated NC Main Street Community and has an active National Register Historic District, with a growing population over 7,500. The successful candidate for this position will lead the Town’s Planning & Inspections dynamic team, which currently consists of a Senior Planner, a Downtown and Community Development Planner, a Chief Building Inspector, a Permit Technician, a part-time Building Inspector, and a part-time Landscape Professional. The successful candidate will perform technical, professional and management work planning, organizing, and directing a department responsible for planned development for the Town. An exciting opportunity exists to enhance the Town’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan and Unified Development Ordinance as they are currently under revision. Additional projects currently underway include a new elementary school and several residential subdivisions. This position will require above average abilities to build interpersonal relationships, manage multiple projects with competing deadlines in a fast paced environment, exhibit excellent oral and written communications, demonstrate grant management capabilities, and a broad working knowledge of planning and economic development activities.

Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university, with a preference of major course work in urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, public administration, business administration, geography or related field is a minimum requirement. A minimum of 8 years experience in a Planning field is required, in addition to a minimum of 4 years supervisory experience. AICP and CZO certifications are preferred. North Carolina planning experience preferred, but not required.

Must possess a valid NC driver’s license and ability to work flexible hours, including substantial evening meetings as needed. The successful applicant must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background investigation, and credit check. Hiring range: $65,000 - $70,000, with excellent benefits package including 5% 401-k contribution, LGERS membership, paid medical, dental and life insurance, 12 paid holidays + paid birthday day off, vacation and sick leave, and annual longevity payment.
